John, Executive Director, supportive housing agency, south-central Ontario region
I've always enjoyed my work and in coming to work. I think it is something that I really don't have to work at. I'm very comfortable dealing with people who are marginalized, who are victimized. Its just a spot that's dear to my heart.
[The agency] provides residential housing, which is supported housing, and we rent units in the private rental market and we provide support services to our consumers in those units. We also provide moderate case management services to people who live independently in the community as well as intense case management through community treatment orders.
We provide a spectrum of services from minimum support, maybe once or twice a month, up to eleven hours per day. I think it is a good balance for our consumers and depending on where they are, they can move through the various programs. Our goal is independent living and in providing flexible support services to assist our consumers to manage their lives.
I don't think I had a clear plan when I graduated from school or I said that in 20 years that I want to run an agency. It took a lot of hard work and dedication, a commitment. It's a career where you can make a decent living. But, it's the gratification you get in doing your job and knowing that you do make a difference and that you've formed positive working relationships both with your consumers and your colleagues.
